When New York—based graphic designers and long-time friends Timothy Goodman and Jessica Walsh found themselves single at the same time, they decided to try an experiment. The old adage says that it takes 40 days to change a habit—could the same be said for love? So they agreed to date each other for 40 days, record their experiences in questionnaires, photographs, videos, texts, and artworks, and post the material on a website they would create for this purpose. I met the right person afterwards. We met on Happened, my first date a month after the experiment ended. TG: The project enabled me to be more honest with myself about wanting to dating a relationship with someone worth it, someone great. Jessie made me realize that. This project took it to a whole new personal level—mashing design with our york lives.
It created a unique dating platform. Now Tim and I are forty on another project. TG: I hipster heard a great quote by Lena Dunham. JW: Days wanted it to reflect the digital presence we had: colorful, with lots of big, bold typographic artwork. In designing the book, our first instincts as designers was to make some big crazy and coffee table book with postcard cutouts and dating pages. When we spoke with Timothy for his digital interview, the project had already debuted. In many ways, it has clearly been good, but was doing it good for my design career? Jessica : 40 Days of Dating made me rethink my career and the way I work. Timothy : I recently heard a great quote by Lena Dunham. What was the most important lesson you learned about relationships, romantic or not, from the project? Jessica : The most important lesson I learned was to relax, be myself, and not worry so much about dating or finding the right person.
In an attempt to test whether friends could force love, Tim & Jess embarked on #40DaysOfDating. This is what happened afterwards.

There were certain rules attached to the experiment. Finally, they had to fill in a questionnaire at the end of every day and document their relationship. They both treated the whole thing fairly analytically at first, like a science experiment with cocktails and cutesy little notes they write to each other before their dates. But then, after about a week, it starts to get interesting — mainly because they start to actually fancy each other.

How has your approach to love, dating, and relationships changed since the experiment? JW: Before the experiment, I was trying to chase love, in a way. I was looking hard for the right person, which indirectly put way too much pressure on my relationships.

He told me that when his mother got pregnant, his father made her choose between keeping the child or staying with him. It seems to me his dating style could result from this.
He breaks off relationships before they get too serious to avoid the risk of abandonment. We all have our issues and cope with life differently. Did you learn anything new about yourself? I heart my dad! My parents married at a young age, and have a successful marriage.
